Lunar Eclipse Superstitions

Lunar Eclipse Superstitions You may Recognize

By Bobby Blueblood
lot of superstitions are still around from age old times relating to eclipses. There are many superstitions regarding lunar eclipses in many cultures around the world. The origins of superstitions regarding lunar eclipses are basically from India and China.

Some people in India still do not come out of the house during eclipses. They try to protect themselves from the bad rays emitted by the sun during a solar eclipse. They bang huge drums in order to scare away the evil energy of the moon during a lunar eclipse.

Some Indians also do not cook food or eat during a lunar eclipse. After the eclipse is over, they cleanse themselves by taking a bath in the holy rivers. It is also said that they put basil leaves and Darba grass over food items and in many places of the house as this type of grass is said to repel harmful radiations. Back in ancient times the Babylonians took lunar eclipses as a sign of doom or damage. Many predictions were done by soothsayers and astrologers regarding lunar eclipses so any necessary steps could be taken to avoid mishaps.

According to the Holy book ‘The Bible’, a lunar eclipse is a sign of the coming of the Apocalypse and this can happen only when the moon turns red. Some cultures believe that an eclipse is a symbol of a calamity’s end. Superstitious Greeks take the lunar eclipse as a force of the Greek Gods. The Japanese still shoot guns during a lunar eclipse in order to end the phenomenon as quickly as possible, though it is done just to perform a ritual prevalent since their ancestor’s times.

There are still other superstitions that say a lunar eclipse has an effect on the human behavior and nature. Some people are said to go insane during a lunar eclipse, while in others it has a less, but still a powerful effect on some people’s minds, bringing out the violent nature of the person at that particular time. Some people are insecure regarding their house, property and life during lunar eclipses.

See how nature – trees, flowers, grass – grows in silence; see the stars, the moon and the sun, how they move in silence…we need silence to be able to touch souls.
~ Mother Teresa of Calcutta

The stars shine brightest when the moon is gone.
~ Nigerian Proverb

When the moon is not full, the stars shine more brightly.
~ Ugandan Proverb

He who waits for the moon waits for darkness.
~ African Proverb

The moon grows darker as it gets nearer to the sun.
~ Tibetan Proverb

Pregnant women do not come out of the house during lunar eclipses as it is a superstition that an unborn child may be born deformed or unhealthy. Kneading, weaving, cutting, sewing and mending work should be avoided by pregnant women when there is a lunar eclipse. A baby born during a lunar eclipse will have distorted limbs, cleft lips or scars on their body as the superstition goes. Women who have conceived during a lunar eclipse should not brush their hair during that time as it is said that the umbilical cord might strangle the neck of the unborn baby.

In ancient times, the Chinese believed that the moon had been eaten up by a dragon. So it was a sign of ill omen by them as it depicted the anger and wrath of the sun upon the moon. They also took it as a heavenly sign from the supernatural power which predicted the future of their kings. In spite of the amazing and spectacular beauty of this natural phenomenon, some superstitions are still prevalent today that make it a bit scary and fearful when there is a lunar eclipse.

Questions about Lunar Eclipse, etc.

Susan asks…

What would you say about a baby born during a lunar eclipse?

Hi, my little boy was born during the lunar eclipse on the morning of August 28th. Does being born then have any significance in astrology? He’s a Virgo, moon in Pisces if that makes any difference. Thanks!

Suzi Q answers:

I would have to say that your child will have a challenging life for himself. I did some research on the net and found this article for you. I have been studying astrology for 15 yrs and I agree with this article. I copied and pasted for you.

Sun opposition Moon(lunar eclipse)
People born when the Sun opposes the Moon have an internal struggle between their needs and their wants. In contrast to the Sun-Moon conjunction personality, the Full Moon personality is inclined towards lack of focus and indecision. Their ability to be objective is both an asset and a liability, simply because when they decide on one route, they are pulled in another direction at the same time. Something tugs at them, and they begin to question their stance. “But what if…” and “on the other hand…” are statements they can’t help making and that plague them.
Their inner struggle is most obvious in their vitality, as both the Sun and the Moon strongly influence the vitality. They have many ups and downs, and it is hard to know if it is physical or emotional. In fact, it’s likely both. These people might spend a week working hard, and the following week they lack motivation and find it hard to accomplish much. Their energy fluctuates more than most people, and it is very much a reflection of what is going on inside.

It is hard for Sun opposition Moon people to find happiness within themselves. They tend to look outside of themselves for fulfillment. They are inclined to form serious relationships at an early age, simply because of this tendency to try to find an answer to happiness from an “other”. They are prone to divorce, partly because of this prematurity, and partly because their needs are complicated. Full Moon people are also more apt to seek counseling because of this need to find answers.

These people appear to be very self-aware. They entertain a myriad of different points of view and perspectives. They are excellent psychologists and are able to read character and uncover motivations–but with an important caveat: if they are too emotionally close to the situation, they fumble. The truth is, although they appear to know much about how people tick, they spend a good part of their lives uncovering more of themselves and learning about themselves. Generally, this is done through comparisons or through the mirror of relationships.

They can most certainly frustrate the people who are close to them with their indecisiveness and frequent changes of mind (and of heart). A word to those who deal with this on a day-to-day basis: their changes of heart are not a form of insincerity–they are the result of an internal struggle that is very real and very confusing to live with! Sun opposition Moon people can be temperamental, insecure, and very sensitive. The ability to put themselves in someone else’s shoes, and to consider other points of view, is a true asset. However, at some point in their lives, they need to uncover what it is they truly want. This comes easy to New Moon people, and can be a life-long struggle for Full Moon people. On the other hand, it is extremely easy for a Full Moon personality to understand others’ points of view–something that doesn’t come as easily to a New Moon personality. Sun opposition Moon people are generally interesting and complex. Born under a Full Moon, they can be a bit “loony”, perhaps manifesting itself in a unique sense of humor.

Looking at his chart, it shows alot of squares with other planets. I have never seen so many planets at odds with each other before. His is not an easy chart at all. He will have a difficult life. I know this is something you don’t want to hear for your child and you will think im crazy and you may dismiss astrology as non-sense. You would be wise to seek a professional astrologers opinion. They will probably back up what I am saying but add in other more detailed stuff.

On a positive note this chart signals a “never satisfied feeling” to the person. If he finds something he is good at, like sports or music or math, etc. He will strive constantly to be better and better at it, so much, that he will no doubt make a name for himself i.e. Become an expert in his field and be a sought after source for what he can do or knows.

Good luck to you both-mike

James asks…

Do you believe in this old wives tale?

About being pregnant and not wearing a safety pin on your underwear or shirt when there’s a lunar eclipse your baby will be born with a cleft lip??

Who believes this?
And would you wear one just in case??

Suzi Q answers:

Heck no

George asks…

lunar eclipse and labour?

Hello! I have a brand new baby girl 🙂 born on the 21st. I went into labour during the eclipse, and later my doctor told me that half her patients were calling about contractions that night! One other patient gave birth just after I did. She thinks she was so busy because of the eclipse. I was wondering if anyone else had heard of this sort of thing?

Suzi Q answers:

Well i think that it’s possible. Our bodies are made up of 70% water and we all know that the moon does take affect on the water. For example, the moon controls the tides so why wouldnt it have an affect on the water in our bodies?

Hell, I wish I were at least 37 weeks by the 21st so that I could have went into labor and had this little boy already lol.

Ken asks…

Anyone else hoping the full moon/lunar eclipse/winter solstice will induce labor?

38 and half weeks along, with my second. All these coinciding astrological events, for the first time in about 350 years is making me cross my fingers! Hopefully it will be a busy night! I was born on a Friday the 13th so it would pretty cool to have a baby on a red moon!

Suzi Q answers:

CRAZY coincidence! I am 38 1/2 weeks too! This is my first so I am less likely to go before my due date. Good luck to you! I am also in the midwest, we are getting hit with a snow storm tonight. I hope baby comes soon!

Paul asks…

I dont know whats happening to me, I think i might be a werewolf?

I have reasons to believe that i might somehow be a werewolf. I know this seems quite stupid, and ive tried to explain it in other ways, but some things just dont add up.

heres the easily explainable stuff:
– I have a deeper connection with canines than most people, but i have grown up around numerous big dogs and I have always had a love for animals
– I am always alot happier while i am in the woods, but i have been camping since i was five and have never been afraid of the woods
– I am very loyal and protective of my friends, but i dont like to get close to many people and naturally my bonds with close friends would be stronger
– I am a natural born leader and im not afraid to take charge
– I can run literally forever, but i also have alot of endurance, and i run on a weekly basis
– My hair is quite thick, although this could be inherited
– Im have really good hearing, this could also be inherited

Now for the stuff i cant explain:
– I can see nearly perfectly in the dark, almost as well as i see in the day
– My adult canine teeth came in while my baby canines were still in, and they were infront of my baby teeth, and they looked exactly like what a dogs do
– I have developed a certain liking for rare meat, when its well done i dislike the texture
– I have always had a very bad temper, but recently it has become alot worse
– I have a really long tail bone, this could be inherited, but none of my family members have a long tail bone
– Both my sets of canines ( babies have been ripped out) are or were sharp enough to break skin
– Recently, I seem to have gotten alot stronger, without working out. Objects that were previously to heavy for me i can now lift easily

Now for the really troubling stuff:
– I never get cold, and I mean never. I can stand outside in -30 degrees (celsius) for 30 minutes in nothing but my boxers and im still not cold
– I heal abnormally fast, injuries that would normally take weeks to heal will be gone within days
– Things that would normally severely injure someone barely hurt, like having your head thrown into a locker
– I can control how much blood goes to the palms of my hands, as well as the soles of my feet, similiar to a dog controlling the amount of blood to the pads of their feet
– My sense of smell is heightened, and i am now able to smell blood
– Recently, I have had unexplained urges to go hunting, even though i have never been or wanted to go before
– Ive also started to have increased reflexes and reaction times, which is one thing that should not change as drastically as it has in this amount of time

Heres what is causing me to truly wonder about this. I recently had my sixteenth birthday ( about a month ago) and on that night there was a full moon. And 3 days before there was a blood moon and a lunar eclipse. All of these things are supposedly linked to being or becoming a werewolf. And i am strangely drawn to the moon for no particular reason.

Im a reasonable person and ive tried to explain as much of this as i can through science or logic, but there are some things which i just have no answers for. I know lots of this may seem to be symptoms of a disease called lycanthropy ( i think its called that), were someone believes they are, or are able to change into a wild animal, and in this case a wolf. This is not the case, everything ive described is real and does happen regularily, and my close friends are noticing it too, they have been asking questions and idk what to say.

I know it doesnt make sense. But i am truly trying to figure this out. Im not religious, but i am open minded about things like this, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Please no smart ass remarkes, if you dont have something helpful to contribute, move along.

Ryan
From what ive read, a werewolf has to actually see the full moon, rather than there just happening to be one on that night. And this months has not come yet, so i havent seen a full moon since my birthday. This may seem to contradict many stories about werewolves, however, ive read some older depictions of werewolves and in all of them, when the person sees the full moon, thats when the transforamation occurs. On that note, whenever i see the moon, i start to lose control of myself, and have to look away quickly. One other thing is my family seems to be hiding something from me. I was told by a relative that i was adopted, and when i asked my parents about it they didnt answer. This just adds to my unease.

Also, if you are going to answer ‘no, you are not a werewolf’ please give a better reason than ‘ because they arent real’

Suzi Q answers:

If its possible for a person to see the time and date of someone’s death, I’m sure its possible for you to be a human with wolf like characteristics. You were probably born with extra chromosomes which would explain a lot of your “problems?” .. Unless of course this question was a joke.. In which case it could still be possible, but oh well. If you transform, that will be the answer to your question. But I don’t think your going too 🙂 hope this helps.

Mandy asks…

Show name for a horse. What do you think of these?

Here are the show names I have come up with for one of my horses to use next year( if I do end up showing). What do you think? The real names are, Zara, Luna, Duke, Nova, Dancer, Anna. The show names will have their real names in them. Any suggestions? I can not really think of one that has Luna in it at the moment. Still deciding what horses will be used in what events. Thanks. And please no rude comments. Thanks again.

Lunar Eclipse or Lunnie Tunes (Luna Latin for moon) is a 2 year old Quarter Horse filly, she is strawberry roan, has a dorsal stripe, and has a right hind sock and a star, snipe, stripe. About 15 hands.
Wow, thank you for all the answers. I really like these ones for Luna: reach for the moon, bella luna, stella luna. Thanks so much.

Suzi Q answers:

I really like them. I like Lunar Eclipse better than Lunnie Tunes and what about Twilight Dancer or Moon or Moonlight Dancer ?

Mark asks…

‘A red moon is a bad moon in Japanese culture. It is a sign of disaster’.Whats Red Moon anyways ?

How can people from this land of rising sun believe in superstitions like this ?

Luvli_ Mystii answers:

The Earth’s atmosphere most scatters the shortest wavelength of light blue making the sky appear blue, while the longest wavelength red could only be slightly deflected. If light takes the longest path through the Earth’s atmosphere to reach us, most of the rays reaching us will be red ones. That’s why Sun rise and Sun sets always appear more red shifted. The same with the Moon as well. If it’s at the farthest distance from us, just above the horizon it will appear more red shifted. Also during lunar eclipse, as the Earth shadows the Moon still the Earth’s atmosphere while scattering all other wavelengths of light, it can’t fully stop the red beam being carried to the Moon, turning it red shifted. This infrared beam from the Moon can penetrate deep into your brain to cause stress and there after restless behaviour patterns. You can see bulls get angry with red color even though they can see only black and white. But red rays from the Sun rise and Sun set causes the opposite as it’s more far away and hits the right balance to prop up our brain. That’s why it is associated with prayers to help concentrate and make firm decisions early morning or evenings ! I would not under estimate anything just listening to modern robots, probably ancient Japanese astronomers knew more about this by real experience !
